Prototype Injection Molding
We provide prototype injection molded components (featuring gears) within a few days or a few weeks, depending on the complexity and how close they must be to production quality. Prototype assemblies require precise movements and measurements, requiring plastic components be molded with great precision. ABA-PGT, Inc. has extensive experience in Prototype Injection Molding.
The mission of the ABA-PGT “Start To Part” team is to take the part and/or program concept of the customer into the following process flow:
- Design and build tooling to assure ease of construction and quick mold changeover; where desirable, operator assembly/disassembly and/or machining of some product features may be incorporated
- Mold parts that meet form, fit, function requirements with key characteristics to be monitored
- Rapid turn-around for the design/part iteration process
- Firm design leading to efficient and effective production-readiness
Comparative Features
While the original concept of the STP acronym was “Start To Part”, the intent of the group is “Steps To Production”. Yet it differs from conventional “production-quality” tooling, as follows:
| “Conventional” Production Prototyping |
ABA-PGT “Start To Part” |
| Tooling is owned by the customer and in most cases has customer tool design approval |
Tooling is owned by ABA-PGT and the customer |
| Tooling is either self contained, in a common frame, or is a single cavity “pull-ahead” in the production mold. |
Tooling is a “cavity set” in an ABA-PGT owned universal frame |
| Molding process is optimized for tolerances as well as cycle time, which may or may not be applicable to a production tool. |
Process optimization is minimized in lieu of speed, yet dimensional characteristics are monitored for accuracy |
| QA: full SIR, PPAP, and capability studies are applicable and are made available to the customer, usu. OEM |
Sample inspection reports (SIR) are performed for OD, ID, OAL and gear data. Capability is reserved for production. |
| Delivery times are in the 6-12 week range |
Delivery times are between 7-15 working days |
